Roland P. Hodges (October 15, 1832 - July 1, 1901) served as a sergeant in Company K, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.
Personal life[]
Roland P. Hodges was born to James H. and Mary (Kitzmiller) Hodges in Washington County, Tennessee. He married Rebecca Ellis (1834 - 1921) on August 16, 1854 and had seven children.
Civil War service[]
Hodges enlisted August 24, 1863 at Louisville, Kentucky for a period of three years. He mustered in January 26, 1864 at Nashville, Tennessee. His given name is also found in records as "Rowland", "Rolen", and "Ralen".
Hodges was appointed corporal December 31, 1863. He was promoted sergeant on September 15, 1864 after Martin D. Anderson was reduced to the ranks the previous day. He is listed as present for duty throughout his term of service.
Hodges mustered out September 5, 1865 at Knoxville. He had been paid through June 20, 1864 and was owed $38.27 for clothing and received a bounty of $25 for his service with another $75 due to him.
A prisoner of war notation exists in his regimental file without any indication of where and when he might have been captured. This is likely a clerical error as it is incomplete and not found anywhere else in the regiment's records.
Post-war life[]
Hodges applied for an invalid's pension dated March 6, 1886. His wife, Rebecca, applied for a widow's pension on July 11, 1901. He died July 1, 1901 in Washington County, Tennessee and is buried in Allison-Boring-Hodges Cemetery in Oak Grove, Tennessee.
