Valentine B. Hawkins (abt 1842 - August 31, 1864) served as a corporal in Company D, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.

Personal lifeEdit

Valentine B. Hawkins was born to Richard Washington and Elizabeth "Betsy" (Greer) Hawkins in Tennessee.

Civil War serviceEdit

Hawkins enlisted September 24, 1863 at Greeneville, Tennessee for a period of three years. He mustered in October 28, 1863 at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. Hawkins is described as 5'9", light complexion, dark eyes, and black hair and at the time of enlistment his occupation was "farmer".

Hawkins was left sick at Gallatin, Tennessee August 11, 1864 and died August 31, 1864 due to typhoid fever at Pest Hospital No. 1.

At the time of his death he was paid to June 13, 1864 and had previously received $25 for his bounty. Hawkins received $54.08 in clothing from the time of enlistment. His personal effects consisted of two shirts and two blankets which were turned over to a council of administration and sold for $2.

Hawkins' mother applied for a pension on March 30, 1883.

According to the U.S. Civil War Roll of Honor, Hawkins was first buried in Gallatin, Tennessee and reburied in Nashville National Cemetery under the name "Valent B. Hawkins". His grave has not been located.
