William Nelson Alvis (March 18, 1844 - August 31, 1909) served as a private in Company K, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.
Personal life
Alvis was born to John M. and Naomi (Hart) Alvis in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Alvis married Mary Ann Lipe on August 31, 1865. They had at least 13 children.
Civil War service
William Alvis enlisted in Company K on January 1, 1865 in Knoxville, Tennessee for a period of three years. His date of muster in is not recorded. His surname is spelled "Alvas" in the regimental records.
Alvis was sent on detached service with a Lieutenant Sizemore on January 11, 1865.[1] He deserted March 15, 1865 in Knoxville. Scott and Angel list him as absent without leave starting April 12, 1865.[2]
At enlistment he was 18 years old, 5' 6" tall, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, and a farmer.
Later life
He applied for an invalid's pension September 28, 1896. His wife applied for a widow's pension on June 6, 1911.[3] Alvis died August 31, 1909 in Hawkins County, Tennessee and is buried in Alvis Cemetery in Rogersville, Tennessee.
